Second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms / Polonnaruwa

The second most ancient of Sri Lanka's kingdoms Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu who defeated the Chola invaders in 1070 CE to reunite the country once more under a local leader. The eastern corner of the culture triangle was the silver capital polonnaruwa that followed Anuradhapura. Though lasted only a few decades over two centuries, the colossal work of art and architecture , both Buddhist and Hindu, including stupendous image shrines like Lankatilaka , Tivanka Pilimage and Parakrama Samudra(Sea of Parakrama), still breath the classical warmth of the preceding era. The stone carved Buddha icon of the GALVIHARA attracts thousands of connoisseurs all year around.

The archaeological remains at Polonnaruwa best exhibit the royal architectural achievement.
